Frozen Pipe and Winter Water Damage Guide

Steps to take after a frozen or burst pipe, including source control, safety, documentation and drying considerations.

Turn off water if safe

  • A burst pipe can continue releasing water after a freeze event.
  • Use a qualified tradesperson when the shutoff or pipe is unsafe or inaccessible.

Protect against electrical risk

  • Do not enter wet areas with uncertain electrical conditions.

Open the affected area only as needed

  • Water can travel through insulation, ceilings, walls and floors.
  • Unnecessary demolition should be avoided until the path of water is understood.

Dry the building materials

  • Cold conditions, insulation and enclosed cavities can extend drying time.
